Calgary is such an awesome city to live in, and visit. For first timers, there’s so much to see just walking around the downtown core that you don’t have to put an awful lot of work into exploring the place. But, if you’ve been multiple times, or return regularly for work, you might want to consider doing things a little differently next time you’re in town. Here are some suggestions that’ll help you explore in a completely different way.

Raft the Bow River. On a warm sunny day, you can get amazing views of the city as you raft your way down the meandering Bow River. Rent equipment from Lazy Day Raft Rentals, and get together with your friends, or kids because this is an awesome family activity too, and just float. Bonus: You’ll likely see some interesting wildlife and plenty of natural beauty en route too.

Bike it. Calgary is an extremely bike friendly city, and there’s a huge network of bike paths that take you through both urban areas and parklands in and around the city. There are plenty of shops that rent bikes, such as Sports Rent, which also has tandems (admit it, you’ve always wanted to try one haven’t you?) and lots of options when it comes to bike styles and sizes (including kid’s bikes).

Whoosh by on a Segway. If you’ve never ridden a Segway, they are super fun and very easy to use. River Valley Adventure Co offers Calgary tours that start in Sien Lok Park, a Chinese cultural park located on the south Bow River Pathway.

Join a Walking Tour. Having a local show you their side of the city is of course an excellent way to get to know a place, and the folks at Calgary Walks offer a Downtown Tour that showcases the history and culture of the city, but also where the locals go to eat, drink, and hang out.

See the Mountains from Above. Though not strictly a way to see Calgary, just a short drive outside the city you can access a number of helicopter tours that’ll take you out over the mountains that surround it. The views are just incredible, and this is definitely one for the old bucket-list. Plus, operators such as Rockies Heli Canada offer up several different experiences, including romance packages that would make this a seriously impressive date idea.

One way to make sure your Calgary trip is fabulous is of course to stay in one of our beautifully appointed Downtown Suites. We’ll take care of you so that you have an awesome stay, and feel at home away from home.
