Fall is such a fun time to visit Winnipeg. It isn’t too hot, the city is pretty as the leaves change, and there are still plenty of fun festivals and events going on throughout the city. September in Winnipeg is especially fun, and here’s what you should do if you’re lucky enough to be visiting this month:
Founding Nations Pow Wow at The Forks – September 4th. This free annual event showcases the various styles of dance and traditional music from Manitoba’s aboriginal communities, and it is a beautiful way to spend an evening.
ManyFest – September 8th – 10th. This two day street party is filled with live music, food trucks, races, outdoor movies, markets, and a wine and beer garden. There’s a kids zone too, so the whole family can party.
Winnipeg Chinatown Street Festival – September 9th – 10th. This festival has night markets, cultural performances, a late-night screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, kung fu demos, live music, and plenty of delicious food.
Mass Appeal Ukulele Jam – September 16th. Whether you love the jaunty sounds of the ukulele, or have one to bring along (song sheets are available on the website), this gathering of players at The Forks is set to be a lot of fun.
Brew at the Zoo – September 17th. Love craft beer and zoo animals? Well, you’re in luck because this after-hours adults-only event at the Assiniboine Park Zoo showcases both of those things, and there’s food and live music too.
Winnipeg Irish Festival – September 22nd – 24th. This week long celebration of all this Irish is celebrating its 30th year in Winnipeg. There’s music and dancing, cultural workshops, concerts and a ceili (aka massive party).
Arrival from Sweden: The Music of ABBA – September 22nd – 24th. The Winnipeg Symphony are teaming up with ABBA tribute artists to present a night of pure pop. Arrival from Sweden put on an amazing show, and have toured 65 countries, selling out multiple US tours. The shows will be retro and amazing, with a full orchestral accompaniment – what more could an ABBA fan want?
Steve Earl and the Dukes – September 26th. Outlaw rocker Steve Earl plays one hell of a show, and is touring an exciting new album, so this concert at the Burton Cummings Theatre should be pretty amazing.
Nuit Blanche – September 30th. This all night arts fest takes over the city, putting performance and visual art in unexpected places. There’s a shuttle service to get you around to all the art, and planning out your night in advance is a good way to make sure you get to see everything that you want to (as these events tend to get busy and it can be easy to get distracted).
