Culture, Fun, and Rodeo at Summer Festivals in Calgary

Published on April 24, 2015 by Roseman

Whatever time of year you visit Calgary, there’s always plenty to do, but if you’re heading there in June, July, or August then it is highly likely that you’ll have even more opportunities for fun: There are 40 summer festivals in Calgary this year. Yes of course there’s the Calgary Stampede, which is definitely a bucket-list event, but there are also cultural, arts, family, and various other festivals happening. Here’s a round-up of some that you might want to consider a trip to Calgary for:

The Greek Festival (June 19th, 20th, 21st)

Say Opa! at this fun festival celebrating Greek culture, wine, food, music, and dance. Super family friendly, this event is great fun, and showcases the best of Greece in Calgary. So come watch plenty of live music and dance performances while enjoying plates of souvlaki and potatoes, or lamb dinner, followed by baklava and all kinds of other deliciousness!

The Calgary Stampede (July 3rd through 12th)

Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the world come to compete for millions of dollars in this classic event, but there’s so much more to it than just rodeo. From knock-out evening entrainment from the likes of Matthew Good, Tokyo Police Club, Dallas smith, Billy Talent, and The Trews, to fairground rides and games, and a legendary range of delicious and sometimes bizarre fairground foods to sample (bacon wrapped corn or deep-fried cheesies anyone?), this event is crazy fun no matter your age or what you’re into.

Calgary Folk Music Festival (July 23rd through 26th)

This fantastic musical festival has three days of amazing artists for you to come and see, including Lucinda Williams, the John Butler Trio, Hawksley Workman, Father John Misty, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Frazey Ford (from the Be Good Tanyas), and many more. Besides music, you’ll find an interactive family area, international food stalls, a tree-shaded beer garden, record tent, and stalls.

Calgary International Blues Festival (July 27th through August 2nd)

If you love blues, then you’re going to want to buy a four day pass to this massive festival showcasing some of the biggest names in blues music, such as Walter “Wolfman” Washington, harmonica master Sugar Blue, and Grammy winner Bobby Rush. There are also dance parties that go late into the night, and the event is known for its warm, friendly, and relaxed atmosphere.

These are just a few of the festivals, you’ll find a more comprehensive listing here on the Visit Calgary website.
